Coronation Considerations: Business Impact

The Coronation of King Charles III will take place on Saturday 6 May 2023 at Westminster Abbey, London, and will include a weekend of events and a special Bank Holiday on Monday 8 May.

Here the British Retail Consortium (BRC) share the latest information about the Coronation and things for retail businesses to consider in planning for the event.

Background information

The Department of Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) is leading planning for the Coronation, working alongside the Royal Household. DCMS has recently published a website which includes background information about the ceremony and all the latest details about how people can get involved, but there is currently little information for businesses.

It's fair to assume that there will be street parties and ‘Big Lunches’, allowing people to come together in communities to celebrate, along with a Coronation Concert which the public can apply to attend via a ballot. On the Bank Holiday Monday, 8th May, the ‘Big Help Out’ will see a focus on volunteering, with people encouraged to support activities of charities and local community groups.

Timeline

Saturday 6 May Coronation Ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

6 – 8 May Coronation Big Lunches across the country and Commonwealth.

Sunday 7 May Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle.

Monday 8 May Bank Holiday, Big Help Out activities.
