Designing Without Foam: Pinholders at RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Pin Holders

As floral foam continues to fall out of favour, such as the banning of its use at RHS shows for example, the challenge for florists is how to create designs that can be constructed confidently without the use of dependable, water retaining floral foam.

‘A traditional design using a pinholder at Chelsea Flower Show.’

This is when the pin holder, once relegated to the bottom of the workbox after the invention of foam, has come into its own once again.

So what is a pin holder?

Associated with the Japanese art of Ikebana, the pin holder or Kenzan has been used for centuries. They are now found worldwide and are a popular option for arranging flowers in a sustainable, eco-friendly way.

How are pin holders constructed?

They are designed with a heavy metal base for stability so that they sit securely on the bottom of a vase or bowl. Attached to the base are metal upright brass pins with sharp points that hold stems of flowers and foliage in position.

What are the benefits of using a pin holder?

It is a traditional method that will hold flowers securely without the use of floral foam.

They are non-rusting and can be used over and over again.

They come in a choice of sizes and shapes to suit any style of design.

How to use a pin holder

Step One: Match the size and shape of your pin holder to the size of your container and the amount of flower material you are intending to use.

Step Two: Make sure your container is dry before attaching the pin holder using florist’s putty or tack to its base. Press firmly into place.

Step Three: Fill your container with water and add flower food.

Step Four: Create your design by using the pins to hold the flowers. Once in place you can manipulate the stems to arrange upwards and outwards.

Aftercare

Clean your pin holder by rinsing under a tap and using a brush if necessary. Leave it upside down on a clean cloth to drain and dry.

A word of caution!

Pin holders are sharp, store them upside down and don’t leave them lying around on work benches or on the side of sinks.
