Flowers for Wellbeing

Writer: Karen BarnesKaren Barnes

Incorporating flowers into self-care routines is a simple yet powerful way to enhance well-being. Flowers have been shown to boost mood, reduce stress, and create a calming atmosphere. Their colours, scents, and natural beauty stimulate positive emotions, making them an excellent addition to self-care practices. By making flowers a part of daily life, we can cultivate beauty, peace, and joy, enhancing overall well-being.

So, how do flowers enhance well-being?

  • Boost Mood & Reduce Stress

Many studies and research have shown that flowers and plants can increase happiness and lower stress levels. We all love having fresh blooms and plants in our spaces as they create a sense of calm and relaxation.

  • Aromatherapy Benefits

Lavender, jasmine, and roses, have the most incredible natural fragrances, all of which can help relieve anxiety and promote better sleep. The lavender pillow sprays are very popular and often seen in hotels to improve the sleep of their guests whilst staying in the hotel.

  • Encourage Mindfulness

Arranging flowers and plants watering them, or simply observing their beauty can bring mindfulness into daily life, fostering a sense of presence and gratitude.

  • Improve Air Quality

Some flowers and plants help purify the air, contributing to a healthier environment. This is fact and cannot be ignored!

  • Symbol of Self-Love

Buying or growing flowers for yourself is a small act of self-care that reinforces self-worth and joy

Ideas to incorporate flowers into self-care

  • Place flowers and plants in areas where you spend the most time in your home or work place such as your bedroom, dining table or office. Always a winner, and promote this especially for corporate customers.

  • Flower baths, are such an indulgence but what a fabulous way to relax and enjoy ‘you’ time. Adding petals from roses to your bath for a spa-like experience, will enhance your mood straight away, with the warm water infusing the fragrance of the petals to create a beautiful atmosphere. So, having said all of this , why not promote rose petals (especially at Valentines and Mother’s Day)?

  • Floral & Herb teas, some of us enjoy a herbal tea made from flowers like chamomile, hibiscus, lavender and mint for relaxation. They are worth a try if you haven’t, as yet, tasted a fruit or herbal tea. I find they are great for indigestion! Get some for the staff.

  • Arranging flowers is a creative and therapeutic activity and can become a hobby for your customers! I get that it is not a hobby for each of us, so we are usually on the clock to create orders and pick up ad goes, but here is an opportunity for you to market to flower arrangers.

  • When you have a few hours to spare, walking the dog or collecting the kids from school, think about walking in nature, a park, or visit a Botanical Garden or grow your own flowers to nurture a connection with nature.

I have already mentioned a few quick wins in promoting flowers and herbs for well-being and as florists we have the perfect opportunity to boost flower bouquet sales by promoting their emotional and well-being benefits.

Here are some ideas:

  • Market Flowers as a Self-Care Essential - Highlight how flowers enhance mood, reduce stress, and promote mindfulness.

    • Use messaging like:

      • ‘Flowers for Your Well-Being’

      • ‘Boost Your Mood with Fresh Blooms’

  • Offer self-care bouquets designed to uplift, relax, or energise based on colour and fragrance. Take lots of photographs and give a little background on why you have selected these stems.

  • Create special self-care gifts such as: flowers with wellness products like candles, herbal teas, or bath salts, creating fabulous gift sets, not just for peak times but for all year round, promote them on your website, on social media platforms and in your shop and you may be surprised how popular they become.

  • Introduce flower therapy kits, with guides on how to use flowers for relaxation and positivity.

  • Share posts on how flowers benefit mental health and create engaging content like:

  • Offer flower workshops & experiences

  • Host flower arranging for relaxation

  • Partner with yoga studios, spas, or wellness influencers for collaborations.

  • Partner with companies to provide weekly office flowers for employee well-being.

  • Supply spa centres, therapists, and wellness retreats with floral arrangements.

  • Offer flower therapy sessions for workplaces focused on reducing stress.

  • Run seasonal campaigns like Winter Wellness Blooms and Spring Renewal Bouquets.

  • Provide affordable treat-yourself bouquets for customers to buy flowers for themselves.

  • Have a flower subscription box with wellness-themed bouquets each month.
