Advent is the religious countdown to Christmas, and although it’s not observed in a major way by retailers in the UK, it is huge in Europe, where many florists mark this occasion by holding in-house events and demonstrations.
What is an Advent wreath?
This traditional decoration is designed to hold four candles, one for each Sunday in December, a symbolic design which dates to pre-Christian times when candles were lit in the dark winter days as a sign of hope for better times to come. It is still customary today to make the wreath from evergreens and to decorate it with cones, nuts and seed pods to represent resurrection and life, before adding candles in red, purple or white.
