‘Doesn’t it smell lovely in here?’
How many times have florists heard that from customers? They are referring usually to the heady scent of lilies, and even though florists seem to become immune to it over time, the shopper is immediately struck by it.
Without even trying, a florist’s shop has scent on its side. The use of fragrance in retail, or ‘scent marketing’ as it’s known, has shown that it boosts shoppers’ moods and improves their experience, making it more likely that they will notice their environment, feel more relaxed and consequently, spend more.
Why? Because scent is our oldest and most evolved sense, and more intricately linked to memory and emotion than any of our other senses. Match the right scent with the right product and you are on to a winner.
